Properly preparing to land that dream job
I once said to a STEM headhunter that “engineers are capable of making career decisions for themselves”. She gave me a pained look that told me she was biting her tongue. This fueled my drive to build this course. If we’re intelligent enough to send people to the moon and conceive life-saving medical devices, we are more than capable of designing our own careers.
Over the course of years, I’ve been down the job hunt rabbit hole many times, researching for my own career advantage, until my eyes blurred and my head spun. In this age of information, it’s easy to have information overload. It can get overwhelming because there is a ton of information out there and when you research for long enough, you start to encounter conflicting information.
“Use a photo!” “Don’t use a photo!”
“Add a cover letter to show you don’t cut corners!” “Cover letters are a waste of time! Nobody reads them!”
I’ve been in the game for over 20 years now. And with my own history of following the information I researched, advice I was give, and trial and error, I can recognize the patterns: what’s common or accepted, what’s case by case, what applies to engineers, etc.
I’ll be straight with you and say there is no one right process or guaranteed way to obtaining a job offer. This experience is non-linear and dynamic. Every person’s experience will be different, and every job you apply for will have its unique set of situations. That doesn’t stop us from empowering ourselves with the know-how to maintain control of our progress and success. Gone are the days of waiting around for someone to pick us. We have to advocate and champion for ourselves.
This is where this course come in. It’s the chess strategy of the job searching process. It helps you to understand the odds that are set against you and teaches you your options on how to hack the situation to become the exception.
This is your one stop shop. You can spend a couple decades like me going up and down the rabbit hole reading articles, watching videos, signing up for workshops, attending seminars, and then choosing between contradictory information to try and see what works. Or, you allow me to talk and walk you through it in a streamlined, organized, time-efficient fashion. I provide you with every iota of information I have, including my own personal notes and examples. I share everything, telling you whether I agree with it or not, and what has personally worked for me.
Unlike that one headhunter, I wholeheartedly believe we engineers are capable of engineering our careers by equipping ourselves with knowledge. You’ll walk out of this course knowing the ins and outs of the job search process and hacking strategies to stand out as the candidate of choice – the Engineer of Choice; Thereby optimizing your candidacy to land your dream or preferred position or internship in Engineering.
I mean it when I say this course is intense. 71 slides. Almost 4hrs.
This course assumes you already have a target role(s) or industries in mind that you want to focus on applying for. If you’re unclear which direction your next step should be towards, I recommend you look into my Pivoting Engineering course first to see if its right for you.
Otherwise, here’s what we cover in class (this is even more detailed than the course agenda we go over at the start of class):
Since I sincerely want you to succeed, I will leave you with some guidance on next steps, as I’ve done with my other courses.
I’ll be including a Bonus section to cover:
And, to ensure you have no lingering questions, I’m throwing in an optional, free 30 minute one-on-one call with me.
We all want to be on a career path that’s enjoyable and fulfilling, because the more you enjoy your work, the less it’ll feel like work, right?
