The course, Choosing Engineering, truly helped me realize what I wanted out of engineering. As a person with no family background in engineering but a passion for science, I was lost in where to start. Farah’s course designed for students helped me to realize where my personal skills would best fit and what environment I want to be in while working. Thanks to her I have gained confidence in what I want and have been able to get summer internships that I can’t wait to go too. Thank you Farah!

When you hear the term “engineer”, unless you are an engineer, the image that comes to mind is someone like Howard Wolowitz. Entertaining as he may be, he is not an accurate depiction of what engineers and engineering is actually like. Even in college they only teach you about one type of engineering, usually called Design engineering. What they don’t teach you is all the different areas of interest or focus that require someone with an engineering degree. Colleges teach about mechanical, electrical, or software engineering, but the breakdown within those broad scopes is far greater. The Choosing Engineering course sheds light on the subject, and accurately highlights the broad range of skills and interests that an “engineer” can encompass. Whether you are in high school, and wondering if an engineering degree is for you, or you are nearly complete with your engineering degree and preparing for your career, the Choosing Engineering course is a must for you. The best path to success is to be well informed, and that’s what Choosing Engineering does. It provides you with the detailed information that is overlooked in universities, and will help you find an engineering career path that is fulfilling and satisfying, no matter what type of person you are

This course is a great and insightful introduction to the field of engineering, the practicalities behind choosing this profession, the realities of what to expect both before going into school, what to expect in school, after graduation, from mentorships and pretty much all the nuts and bolts to deciding if this is the right career path, which as a parent, is extremely valuable in helping us help our children choose their life path, budget for college, and set realistic expectations for what comes next.
Another unique aspect of this course is that it is really comprehensive and covers the 5 W’s and H of the engineering career. Farah identifies who is the kind of person suited for the engineering profession, tasks the students with identifying their why, what are the considerations they must make in determining if this is the right fit for them and what exactly is entailed, where do they want to go to get a degree and where do they go for professional help and mentorship resources, she offers a timeline (when) of what to expect and how to go about taking the next steps.

I appreciate the opportunity to take this course as a professional outside of the world of engineering. As a scientist I didn’t know what to expect and this course was a pleasant surprise.
From the start the course was captivating and I was impressed at the relevance across disciplines and career paths. As she advised, I took my time and relaxed into the exercises. It took me several hours to work through the You-isms, and some sections needed more reflection than others. Throughout, I enjoyed the logical approach and thought provoking prompts. I discovered that some of my You-ism choices were higher priority than I first thought, for example how much I value cross-functional collaboration. With this knowledge, I am now broadening my career considerations to include cross-team and collaborative positions, for example in technical transfer.
Farah is a great coach and has a clear and methodical approach to helping her students organize and understand their motivators, preferences, values, and strengths. Armed with that knowledge, the otherwise confusing and intimidating choice of making a career shift becomes easier to navigate, and provides a clear roadmap for where to go and how to get there. It certainly achieved that for me. If you are thinking of making a career shift and need guidance on how to achieve that goal, this course is for you!
