Pivoting Engineering Course

Identify the Intentional Next Move in Your Career

About the Course

Farah collecting grease and oil samples

After I graduated with a customized Engineering Degree (I’ll explain later) and took on my first engineering job, I thought I was going to stay with that company forever.

I was wrong.

That’s no longer how the corporate world works. Most companies are now “at will” in letting employees go. Also, as my experience grew, I found that my interests were changing.

Those realizations made me start exploring how to make active changes in my career rather than waiting for things to happen for me.

There are many reasons why you would want a change in your career:

    • You’ve had enough of the toxic or unprofessional work environment (be it the company or the industry)
    • You’re fed up with being underappreciated or made invisible by unrealistic KPIs
    • You’re struggling to manage the endless sea of work, and you fear the next person who asks you for something may cause you to lose it and tell them to go shove it
    • You’re feeling overwhelmed and overloaded to a point where you lack motivation and energy, because the job you accepted wasn’t the role you actually got
    • You woke up one morning and wondered, “How did I end up here??” You want to advance or shift somehow, yet are feeling directionless on how to get out of your career stagnation
    • You’ve had a change of heart about your current role and realized it wasn’t really “you”
    • The industry you work in didn’t end up being what you thought it would be
    • You want to try something new to reignite your passion and sense of fulfillment

If you’re nodding your head, “Yes, Uh-huh”, to any of these scenarios, then isn’t it time for you to take action?

If what you do now, or the industry you’re doing it in, is causing you stress, anxiety, or unhappiness, then it’s time to prioritize yourself and PIVOT!

What's in the Course?

I often advise students who are deciding to study Engineering to have an educated plan and also remember it’s never too late to change the trajectory of their career. The (perhaps linear) strategies that got you to this point are not the same as those that will help you transition into something new. A new position or a new industry requires a whole new mindset and tactics.

For my own engineering career, I spent so much time researching, trying new approaches, failing a few times, backtracking, and then ultimately figuring out the strategy that worked. It got me from being a Project Engineer at a corporate Aerospace job to being the Head of Engineering at a small, family-owned business. And then it successfully pivoted me into Project Management in the Electrical industry.

I succeeded and want to help you succeed too!

Whether you’re a recent grad with a little work experience, or an engineer with decades of experience, this course will teach you the strategy I used to successfully PIVOT my Engineering career. We will walk through the Brainstorm and Prioritization exercises together. And you’ll walk out of class with the new role/industry you should focus your energy and efforts on.

This strategy works. I’ve gone through the process myself and have helped many others!

Additional Notes:

To be clear, this pivoting course is about identifying the most ideal role/industry for you personally (or confirming your compatibility with the one you already have in mind), and identifying what’s standing in the way of obtaining it. This course is not about the job hunting process. (Check out my Engineering the Job Search Course for that.)

While most of my clients use this strategy to pivot within engineering, it can also be used to enter or exit the engineering world. If you’re considering entering the engineering world – I recommend you consider taking the Choosing Engineering Course first.
